Altamont Pass, CA

These images are selected from my first book, Lincoln
Highway: Main Street across America
, and the 80-print
show that traveled coast to coast for under the sponsorship
of Exhibits USA.

The Lincoln Highway was the nation's first transcontinental highway, and at the time of its establishment in 1913, was
3,300 miles of adventurous, unmarked and unimproved dirt
road that connected New York City with San Francisco. I
made these photographs with a mind to reveal something of
the layered history of an old road, to demonstrate what we
might find along its varied route today.

For more information about the project, about the book, see
the Books & Publications section on the site.
